“Airmail Special” - Jimmie Rivers and The Cherokees from Brisbane Bop: Western Swing 1961-1964 (1995).

Brisbane Bop

5 things you need to know about Jimmie Rivers and The Cherokees:

  1. He was born Jimmie Fewell in Hockerville, OK, in 1926.  He died in 2003.
  2. He was influenced by the music of Bob Wills, Barney Kessel, and Charlie Christian.
  3. He changed his named to Jimmie Rivers after a local man expressed distaste for the name Fewell.
  4. He was half-Native American.  His band would often play in Indian headdresses.
  5. In 1958, his band took residency at the 23 Club in Brisbane, CA for 6 years backing greats like Lefty Frizzell and Ernest Tubb.  This album represents the only recordings that remain of his own band’s songs.  Hoots and hollers abound.
